AQUACULTURE…a word recognized around the world as the industry that will be needed to feed the growing global population. Each year, to meet this growing demand, businesses and governments are investing millions of dollars into the development and production of aquaculture products.
AQUACULTURE.COM…is like prime vacant land in Manhattan just waiting to be developed. With the Internet being the worldwide means of communication this domain name can be the “go to” authority for the aquaculture industry.
Worldwide food-fish (seafood) production through aquaculture has grown at an average of 8.8 percent each year for the past three decades. As wild captured seafood peaked or even declined, 2009 was the year aquaculture crossed the threshold of providing more than half of all seafood consumed worldwide according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). The report also points out that aquaculture is growing more rapidly than all other animal food producing sectors globally. The UN also says, “Fish is a food of excellent nutritional value, providing high quality protein and a wide variety of vitamins and minerals, including vitamins A and D, phosphorus, magnesium, selenium and iodine in marine fish.”
Until just a few years ago, most aquafeed consisted mainly of fishmeal and fish oil from wild-caught small ocean fish not commonly used for human consumption, which contributed to environmental concerns as well as depleting wild fish stock. The U.S. soybean industry has developed soy-optimized feeds for most commercial fish species, which replace up to one-half of the fishmeal in feeds for many marine-farmed species and all of the fishmeal in many freshwater-farmed species.
